Kumana National Park, located in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, is a wildlife sanctuary covering 357 square kilometers. Designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, it is known for its bird sanctuary, the Kumana Villu, and is home to over 240 bird species, elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and diverse coastal and forest ecosystems.

Kumana National Park is approximately 390 kilometers from Colombo, around 6 to 7 hours by road, 120 kilometers from Arugam Bay, around 2 hours, and 30 kilometers from Pottuvil. We offer hotel pickup from Arugam Bay, Pottuvil, and Panama.

The best time to visit is from April to September, when the park is open and wildlife is most active. April through July brings peak migratory bird nesting season at Kumana Villu lagoon. May to September brings dry weather that draws leopards, elephants, and other mammals to waterholes, making sightings more frequent. The park typically closes from November to March during the monsoon season.

Yes. Our private jeeps accommodate up to 7 passengers. For groups larger than 7, we arrange multiple jeeps. Contact us directly for group rates and custom arrangements.

Our safaris include a private 4x4 safari jeep, an experienced local driver guide, national park entrance fees, and hotel pickup and drop off within our coverage area of Arugam Bay, Pottuvil, and Panama. The Full Day Safari also includes a packed picnic breakfast and lunch. Check each package page for full details.

The Full Day Safari departs at 5:00 AM and runs for 13 hours, covering both morning and afternoon wildlife activity with a packed breakfast and lunch included. The Half Day Safari runs about 5.5 hours and is available as either a morning slot with a 5:00 AM departure or an afternoon slot with a 1:00 PM departure, and does not include meals. Both cover key wildlife areas of the park, and the Full Day gives you more time across more zones of the park.

Wear neutral, earthy colors such as khaki, olive, beige, or brown. Avoid bright colors and white, as they may disturb wildlife. We recommend a long sleeve shirt for sun protection, comfortable trousers, closed shoes or boots, a wide brim hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Yes, binoculars are highly recommended, especially for bird watching. Bringing your own will greatly enhance your experience. A pair with 8x42 or 10x42 magnification is ideal for spotting both birds and wildlife at a distance.

Yes. Kumana National Park has a healthy population of Sri Lankan leopards. Sightings are more frequent in the early morning and late afternoon. Our driver guides know the areas leopards frequent and regularly spot them, though no wildlife sighting can ever be guaranteed.

Kumana is home to a wide range of wildlife, including Asian elephants, Sri Lankan leopards, mugger crocodiles, spotted deer and sambar, wild boar, purple faced langurs, and over 240 recorded bird species, including painted storks, spot billed pelicans, and purple herons.

Cancellations made more than 14 days before your travel date receive a 90 percent refund, with a 10 percent processing fee that is not refundable. Cancellations made less than 14 days before travel, and no shows, are not eligible for a refund, due to driver and jeep allocation commitments made in advance.
